persian food and edumacation

firstly, double-date dinner night with write softly and her husband was so fun! SO FUN! I was bone tired from laughing when we got home. their little baby is due a month before ours, and I can't wait for them to drool on each other.

secondly, perusing the ny times this morning these two articles caught my eye - one regarding some of President Obama's ideas to change education law (this editorial goes hand in hand) and one about debt and recruiting practices associated with trade/for-profit schools. any of my teacher-friends and family or other interested parties have any reaction? I know there are real frustrations in education now, but being an outsider I'm not sure I understand what teachers and administrators would hope to change. would these sort of proposed changes address any of those concerns?

and would anyone like to share their opinions of narrowing curriculum? has it worked? do you think programs like art, music, and P.E. are expendable? do you think other categories should be added that are currently not?

spring forward!

Google "Texas curriculum changes 2010" for some disheartening reading.

This has nothing to do with persian food or edumacataion, but it is important.

I love the bacon you made me buy. Oh! My! I made it with beans last night. Each bite made me want to cry with joy.

I am seldom speechless. My mother always said, "Ask K for her two-cents worth and she'll give you a nickle." But the Texas Board of Education has frustrated me to spluttering... making a laughingstock of my Christian faith and of my beloved Texas. I'm quite discouraged about education; I'd feel hopeless if I did not know so many wonderful teachers.

I agree with K about how utterly disheartening the Texas Board of Education is. They were featured on Nightline recently so now the entire country can laugh at us.

The things President Obama has suggested are pretty broad so far and there doesn't appear to be much change in the few details presented, really, just a change in how things are presented I think.

We need MORE PE in schools. Kids will learn better if they can have some time to get their wiggles out -- even the older kids, I think. As for art/music, etc -- I think there needs to be room in curriculum for students to develop some kind of hobby/talent. For many kids this is the motivating reason for slugging through the day everyday. So, there should be some choice of elective.
