TWO.

that's the number of times we got up last night. TWO!!!! I hate to bore people with baby stuff ad nauseum, but this is heady, heady, celebratory stuff! we've had a somewhat rough week with growing pains/fussiness/gassiness/constipation?/micro-naps around the clock/who knows what/normal six week old behavior, but last night after a bath and some good second (or third?) dinner Magz went down around 9:30 and didn't wake me up until 3a with little grunts and coos. can you count how long that is?? I can, and compared to the rest of the week it's a freaking eternity! and THEN she went back to sleep around 3:30 and sweetly woke up again around 6, when she ate an early breakfast and entertained herself in her crib while mama took a bath, did some dishes, and made coffee. then daddy went in and played with her awhile before heading off to work, mama changed her clothes and fed her again, and now she's contentedly ensconced in her swing while I type this. guess what was absent from everything I've just described? INCONSOLABLE CRYING. EVEN FUSSY CRYING! there's been none of it and I'm so thankful, for her sake as well as ours. I think we all needed a little reprieve. when people described their baby's crying jags before I had one of my own, I honestly thought, 'huh, how bad can that really be? I mean, they cry and then you, the confident and cool adult, do something soothing and they stop, right?'

I'm sorry. I'm sincerely sorry, everyone, I'm a fool.

I don't want to make it sound like all she does is cry... it's not true at all. I think when you're sleep deprived it's easy to focus on the negative things you're trying to fix and sort out, but since I got ALL THAT SLEEP last night I'm all about the positives this morning. this girl's a great baby who's got a lot going for her...

- she's got a consistently fabulous appetite (only this week have I really felt that my milk production is starting to actually meet her demand)
- is a very flexible eater between mama's beloved breastusez and the occasional breastmilk or formula bottle (and sometimes tolerating the annoying teaser of the pacifier)
- will enjoy (and sometimes sleep in) her play gym, swing, and vibrating chair when she's in the right mood
- is smiling and starting to laugh and respond to peek-a-boo games and such
- can focus on, study, and drunkenly reach toward some of her rattle/crinkly/musical toys and gloworm
- is beginning to entertain herself for longer periods of time on the floor and in her crib/pack n' play, and is probably close to moving into her room for good
- does really well with slings and the baby bjorn (even if she wails a little going in)
- happily falls asleep on whatever chest she's laying on/against
- loves to be held upright on your shoulder, preferably while you're up standing up and moving around.

current dislikes mostly involve pulling things over her head and face (so be sure you really want her to wear THAT onesie, because trying on multiple outfits will seriously test her good humor), being strapped into her car seat, and laying her down anywhere when she wants to be up and held (which is a lot of the time). all of these things can make her scream like you pinched her, and if she's hungry, too, look out.

'shhhh, tell no one of this conversation, you have to trust me!'

'everyone who thinks Pixar is better than Disney raise their hand!'

'this is how we drink our tea, pinky out!'

'one-eyed peek a boo, yo!'

sweet.

fashion-forward on a Friday morning while mama blogs:

lest you think I'm incapable of writing about anything other than our baby, here's a little rug I got yesterday at the local Marshall's that makes me so very happy just looking at it:

it's thicker and more plush than I think you'd normally do in a kitchen, but the colors are really great and it feels so much better to stand on this while doing dishes (a chore I've never loved).

things I'm currently jonesing to do:

work out at the Y
thoroughly enjoy the steam room at the Y
do yard work and work in the beds. I love to get yard-dirty.
fit into one pair of my pre-baby pants
read something all the way through
print some new photos to put in frames and hang them

things I just need to do:

finish unpacking these last, straggling boxes
sort my clothes and pack up the maternity-wear I was loaned
file all of the papers in my 'IN' basket
cut down on my soda and sugar consumption. stupid cravings for sweet things.
up my real food consumption.
back-strengthening exercises... I feel mine being tweaked a lot lately with toting the baby around and whatnot

baby stirring, almost time to head out to the store and the bank. happy Friday, everyone!

pictorial of a six week old nap

mama put me down in my crib to take a little siesta.. those are my friends rabbit and womb-bear, and the red bird I really haven't noticed yet:

I'm not really asleep yet, though. mama's trying to encourage me to fall asleep on my own:

maybe I could drop off if I wasn't in this BLANKET...

though who could sleep with these soft fuzzy things in here with me?! maybe I'll just try to roll over there and reach them...

what, mama, you didn't think I'd try to get at them yet? boo on you, woman, I'm trying even harder, then:

foiled this time. tired. I'm gonna totally roll over and get at them soon, though, so you might want to start clearing the crib (subtext: I'm not a newborn anymore, mad skills coming your way)...

so sleeeee.... py...

what?!... did I fall asleep for ten minutes?! TEN WHOLE MINUTES??!!!

NOOOOOOOO!!!!!

mama... it's you!

STOP LAUGHING AND SPRING ME NOW!!!!

I'm sorry, but this is better for me right now... really, I'm cool hanging out on mama as much as I can at this juncture. does this make me difficult? I think not. I'm little still. get over it.

I mean, I've got months to sleep in that crib... and c'mon, it's not like the woman can't blog with one hand.

(happy six-week birthday, baby! we love that you can smile at us now between the cries!)

growing... (both of us...)

okay, babies really do change so fast... I'm trying to capture what I can while not living behind my camera and missing being here. it's just wild to see her transforming in front of us... she stretched out last night and I was struck by how LONG she is now. Magz is actually 6 weeks old today, as I type this, but here are shots of her that haven't made it into blogs yet:

wide-eyed with a fun rattle toy given to us by the production company that shoots the Fiesta spots (they also gave us an adorable onesie we haven't grown into yet):

learning to play with Daddy:

hanging out on Mama... disregard how huge my belly looks, it's honestly really not that big. for real, it's the way I'm slouching on the couch and the shirt, you guys, the SHIRT
adds ten pounds! :P

I've been actively conquoring my fear of going out in public with my not-yet-trainable offspring by hitting the farmer's market, Marshall's, Ross, Stein Mart, Target (we've currently cried in Target twice, something about that red bullseye makes the baby wail), JC Penney, the Y, Audio Access, my talent agency, Miss Laure's, Aunt SuSu & Laura's, Dr. H's, and a big trip to Hico with a carnival and everything (which will be detailed in another post)... oh, and here's us at Central Market!

bless baby slings. seriously, I have two (plus we have a baby bjorn) and they're fantastic.

one of the pros of being me is that I have a husband who comes home most nights and, after spending some time with the baby, goes into the kitchen to make our dinner. this was last night's meal, courtesy of Christian Cattle Co. and the awesome Alton Brown cookbook Linda gave him this past weekend... thanks, sister!!:

someone else excited about the prospect of her dinner:

and the other member of our family who deserves a shout-out, if only because he's the coolest, sweetest dog ever and has handled this baby thing better than we could have hoped:

wicked

so much to catch up on! let's start with the night we kissed our babe goodbye and headed out to see Wicked at the Hobby Center. we'd gotten tickets as an anniversary gift to one another. M had downloaded the soundtrack to his ipod at Christmas, and we listened to the first act for the first time on the way back to Houston from my folks'. afterward, it became one of our favorite things to sing to, renovate to, etc... M joked that he'd be shocked if our baby didn't come out singing that first act. :) I say first act, because we listened to that half the most and I still believe it's the musically strongest of the show, with more numbers that stick with you (though now that I've actually seen the show the second act doesn't seem quite as disjointed/cheesy as I previously thought based on the music alone).

the show was so much fun! now I'm going to play critic: I understand the technical/fundamental problems critics have had with it, but I think the story is just strong enough that it attracts people and it's easy to forgive places where the music seems overwrought. the two leads did EXCELLENT jobs... Jackie Burns as Elphaba was flipping brilliant, easily out-singing Idina Menzel, her Broadway soundtrack counterpart. I thought Chandra Lee Schwartz's Glinda was also fabulous - my friend C.M. was annoyed by a nasality in her vocal quality, but I thought she was hilarious and a wonderful singer - let's face it, it's tough to compete with Kristin Chenoweth's otherworldly chords and C.L.S. owned it so much that, after a short period of scrutiny, I forgot to compare the two. I also really appreciated how each played their character arcs... it was all very clean and clear. I remember thinking that Glinda's song at the beginning of Act 2 was done so well both vocally and dramatically, as she wavered between her cheery 'everything's fine, I couldn't be happier!' exterior and the confusion and vulnerability of things really not working out with Fiyero as she'd planned, to finally ending on a determined 'I'm going to make it work no matter the cost!' note. everyone in the cast was good, really, which is to be expected for a tour like this - if I was nitpicking, I'd say Fiyero's first scene was a little flat just because he wasn't projecting/enunciating well enough, and Larry from Three's Company, while a fine and genial wizard, didn't have the energy or chops that I imagine Joel Grey did when the role was originated. but all in all, what a fun night of theatre!

our view of the stage... we were so close! these were awesome seats!

Uncle Jeff & Grammy saw the show the next night and brought Magz a souvenir:

it's fun to think about taking this little one to her first play someday. :)

tips for venturing out?

okay, I'm taking any advice you moms have about taking your baby out into the world. we haven't ventured out that much, really, aside from a couple of trips to restaurants when the family was in town, a few church visits, and a few furtive errands. here's the thing - I promise I'm not a hater, but I AM that person who groans inwardly every time I see someone bring their baby or toddler to any movie not rated G, so while I want to embrace a family-friendly attitude I'm reeeeeely sensitive about being the lady with the disruptive baby in the store, or the restaurant, or whatever. I've always felt this way about my dog, too - I love him to death, but realize that not everyone loves him (or animals in general) so whenever we have company or take him out in public I'm always super-aware of how he's being perceived and I try to avoid any awkwardness. I realize I need to get over this somewhat or the baby and I will have semi-solitary lives, and while I don't want to overstimulate Mags or put her in situations she's not ready for I do want to feel confident when we choose to go out. how did you guys work it? I can think of these things:

plan outings during the baby's 'good' time
feed her right before we leave (this has worked pretty well for church & restaurants)
don't plan on being out too long
have the right materials on hand - diaper bag essentials, paci, etc.
have a backup plan? like, if she's not liking the carrier/stroller, whip out the sling?
always know where the exit is and be prepared to abort the mission. :)
lighten up. :) :)

other suggestions?

lame blogger...

with all of the material I've amassed lately, how could I NOT be blogging my fingers off?? there can only be a couple of reasons:

a) I'm just incredibly lame. LAME.

b) I'm just incredibly doing other things. and when I'm not, I'm incredibly not inclined to string sentences together with thoughts and stuff behind them.

but I think about it. oh, do I think about it.

here's a smattering of topics I've thought to write about, and be warned - some of it isn't for the squeamish:

The Aftermath of Birth, Part One - this would be about my time in the hospital after giving birth. this would be a very graphic and gory post about my absolute shock at all of the blood, everywhere, after this event. for days and days. about the slow and ever-so-careful trips from the hospital bed to the bathroom to attempt to deposit enough red, metallic-smelling pee in a dish for the nurses to examine while trying to keep the place from looking like a crime scene. the smell of blood like that is one of the most stomach-turning things I've ever experienced, no lie, and I wanted to keep all of my loved ones far, far away from it. about the multiple pads on my bed and in my mesh drawers that I kept obsessively changing. about Tucks medicated pads, so cool and soothing. about laying in that hospital bed and trying to get a wink of sleep between the baby waking up and nurses popping in, unable to get comfortable because my back and arm muscles were so freaking sore from pulling my legs back to push the baby out. about the slow, ginger descent into the hospital's whirlpool tub and fervent prayers that I'd be able to lift myself out of it again, and the fabulous, healing, near spiritual experience I had in that tub the half-dozen times I used it before I went home. about the pain medication... ah, how sweet you were. about all of the information given to us by nurses, consultants, and nursery attendants, much of which I don't really remember because I'd just had a baby and barely slept at all you guys, this is a lot of information, for real, and how do you expect me to keep up with all of these papers?? this is where I would point out that mikebell is a God-send. literally. and I should probably point out that all of the nurses and staff were really extraordinarily nice and helpful.

The Aftermath of Birth, Part Two - this would be about coming home. it would touch on things like, oh, the fact that I retained a lot of fluid in my legs that made them look super swollen, and how it eventually worked down into my feet and made them look like fat little sausages. and how that sort of messed with my ego. as did the fact that, when I came home from the hospital, the scale showed I'd only lost 5 lbs. now, I knew these things were temporary, but that didn't stop me from feeling ginormous and puffy. I'd recount the terror of the first bowel movement, and how it ended up being not so bad. then I'd caution against getting too smug, and extoll the virtues of continuing to take stool softeners so you'd be spared passing the tearful, traumatic, and shocking anaconda-like waste I did a few days later. I'd probably talk about how we thought Maggie was so laid-back until the night she screamed at us and wouldn't be pacified by any of our desperate antics, and how Marmee came in and gently took her away to soothe her and leave us to fall into a rattled sleep. about how her first real meltdown was a little terrifying, and how now I find it largely funny. about how I'd feel so calm and cool, and then find myself looking at her and dissolving into tears of love and fear. about how everyone says to take it easy and I totally get that, but all I wanted to do was get up and do something useful and normal with my body, like clean the bathroom. about how hard it is to not compare yourself to other people who've had babies. oh, and about the new normal of not having great control over your nethers, as evidenced by the fact that I totally tooted publicly when our friends were over for dinner one night! and then was all, la-di-da, tee-hee, sorry, I can't help it! (chels, I thought about that for DAYS and just shook my head...)

Breastfeeding - this one would start with the lactation consultant in the hospital announcing that I had flat nipples ad teaching us how to deal with that. she was so great. then we'd skip to how my milk didn't actually come in until Saturday evening after Magz was born on Tuesday, and how our visit to the pediatrician Saturday morning revealed that she'd lost more weight than he was comfortable with (7lbs .5oz down to 6lb 3oz) and ended with him recommending we supplement with a little formula to fill her belly, perk her up and soothe her crabbiness, and start her on the path to regaining some weight until my milk was established. this is where I would write about my fear of starting her on a bottle too early and causing nipple confusion, about my anxiety that something would happen and I wouldn't have any milk, ever, and about worrying that people would think I was copping out and not being granola enough by giving my baby something other than breastmilk. as it turned out, the formula did help and increased her appetite, I was relieved and grateful to know my baby was actually being fed, and thanks to introducing the option of using a bottle I've been able to leave Mags at home while I run do my acting gigs, knowing that if something happens she can eat without me if she really needs to, and M and I have felt freer to go out here and there. I'd write about how I still worry about it, though, so I breastfeed her on demand the vast majority of the time. I'd say how lucky we are that she's a great, demanding eater, but her roughness sometimes makes me think the occasional pacifier and bottle have taught her to chew on me, and I'm having to pay special attention to how she latches on and be diligent about doing everything I can to help her.

Guilt - about everything. what I eat, how often I work, bottles, pacifiers, sleep-deprivation and moodiness, quality of time spent with the baby, housekeeping, husbandkeeping, communicating, keeping in touch... it's really overwhelming sometimes, but what can you do but try to put things in perspective and move up and out of it?

Mild Depression - about how I look. sorry for the superficiality. I know my body rocks simply for having a baby and living to tell the tale, but I apparently had unrealistic expectations of how I would bounce back. I've lost 18 pounds so far and feel pretty good, but being this middle size makes it hard - I don't fit into my maternity things really, and my regular stuff is too tight to be decent. and makes me feel like a double-wide. I hope to start working out, doing yoga, anything soon, because it makes me feel better to move and being this size reminds me of the last time I was around this weight (which had nothing to do with a baby and everything to do with copious amounts of beer).

there's more, but this has already become long and I have things I need to address around here. THINGS... like laundry, dishes, and resting. punctuated by breastfeeding this sweet, funny, persistent baby who just wants to be held all day, mama, GOSH.

how rad and informative would those blogs have been, though?!

enjoy this lovely, hump day video...it's proving tough to upload, but check back if you can't see it yet because it's pretty sweet. seriously, Rockabye Baby! is great, we have The Cure and Queen and they're just the bomb.

a family visit & the three week mark

so there are days when all my fussy baby wants to do is be on me... preferably attached to certain milk-producing parts, but she'll accept my lap or shoulder, too (as long as there's milk involved at some point, right, woman?!). it might be easy to get annoyed - have you tried getting anything done while holding a baby all afternoon?? and all the moms said amen - but I figure the time will come too soon when she'll want to be running away from me to explore, so I've decided to try to embrace being in demand like this. here's my sacked out baby in my lap while I attempted to organize my desk:

I'm even typing this blog one-handed because she's sleeping in the other. talent, people.

and I'll include this photo because I'm wearing the shirt I bought in Seattle... I finally fit into it! sorta! a red-letter day, we were both feeling pretty good...

my family came into town for the fourth of July... here's Mo with Magz, who loves to be held by her cousin:

and our three-week old baby this morning:

write softly's latest blog inspired this listing of some things I've thought since this child was born:

what's that in her poo??
oh good, she's normal.
will my boobs ever be the same?
I love how excited she gets when she gets ready to nurse, and I love being the person who can immediately quiet her.
I'm so tired. please just go to sleep, baby, there's nothing wrong with you!
I'm sorry for getting frustrated with you - I know you can't help it.
How nice will it be when she can interact & respond more...
She's going to grow too fast, boo-hoo...
*horrible mental images of things happening to her*
I love her so much. boo-hoo.
will going to do this gig/using a pacifier & bottle/forgetting to burp her/taking her to church/etc. ruin her?
are we already behind?? should we be reading more/playing/etc.?? am I throwing away valuable teaching/bonding time by iphoning while nursing at night??
we will not succumb to pressure to compare ourselves to others! we will relax and get a grip!! and eat fewer cookies, which are undoubtedly not helping.
some favorite words of other moms right now: 'build a wall of confidence' - BMcD... 'you're a parent, not a saint' - write softly
holy crap, I'm a parent. boo-hoo.
going to work is weirdly lonely... I got more used to feeling her move & kick when I did voice work than I thought.
I didn't get anything done today. well, nothing really done THAT YOU CAN SEE WITH YOUR EYES, but I mothered the pants off this little baby and that totally counts.
God, please protect this little person and help us raise her well.

and now I will transfer this deeply sleeping babe to her crib, change out of my Depeche Mode shirt with spit up on the sleeve, and hope to quickly assemble dinner for my sweet husband. because in learning to be a good mom, I don't want to totally forget how to be a good wife.
