every now and then, I take a stab at trying to keep up with daily meditational reading, even if it turns out to be a harried and cursory skimming. I like today's from Letting God:
During WW II, a young bride followed her husband to an army camp in the California desert. It wasn't long before she regretted her move. The dust and heat were terrible, and her new husband was too busy to spend much time with his bride. She grew lonely and bored. The only neighbors were native Americans who spoke little English. She wrote her mother that she was coming home. Her mother wrote back these words: Two men looked out from prison bars; one saw mud, the other saw stars. The message was clear. The young woman decided to make the most of her situation. She learned the Indian tribal language. She studied the desert plants until she became a national authority on desert flora. She wrote a book about the beauty and wonder of the desert. Her contribution came from her choice "to see stars instead of mud". We all have the same choice. Someone once said, "the world is a looking glass. Frown at it, and it will in turn look sourly upon you; laugh at it and with it, and it is a jolly, kind companion." This seems so simple, even trite - until we try it ourselves. It's hard to take the responsibility for our own decision to see the good in the midst of evil.
