paper anniversary

last weekend, I celebrated being married to this man for an entire year:

I like the photo above. like he conquered that tree and claimed it for the betterment of us.

because he is extraordinarily thoughtful, he gave me the sweetest gift ever - framed movie tickets of the first movie we saw together on January 16, 2007. we'd been hanging out a couple of weeks, and I was ready to... um, proceed. because he was playing it super-cool, people. which is why, while we were waiting for the previews to start, I pointedly remarked that my hands were cold. see, I'm in my thirties... I don't have time to make small talk and coyly wait for our hands to 'accidentally' meet in the popcorn box. I just want my hand to be held by someone I like and I'm not above making a dork of myself to accomplish this.

truth be told, after the movie we also shared our first kiss at my aunt's house, and I pretty much played the dork to make that happen, too. how forward do I sound?! I have no regrets.

because here we are, married! two people who weren't sure they'd ever find their lobster. ('Friends' reference, anyone?)

we praise Him.

we also think Flemings is an amazing place to get a first anniversary steak. for reals.

happy belated anniversary.

it is a testament to your relationship together, and your writing, ms. yoshimi, that your marriage touches my life all the time. as my own husband and i drift along in the ocean of the big wide world, we are comforted ceaselessly by being able to look over at your life raft and say to each other, "there's another two people who know how to pull together. we are not alone. someone else has been blessed with the knack of togetherness."

much love and hugs.

Awwww, so good to hear the story again. Though you didn't tell me about the first kiss. I'll have to ask next time I talk to you. Which should be soon!

Yeah, we had our first kiss in the glow of an 'America's Next Top Model' marathon. This undercuts the sophistication of saying we first held hands in a Spanish-language fairy tale set against the fascist revolution of 1936.

Thanks, Tyra.

So...merrily we row along. I love you so so much and I'm thankful MGB is in your life and that you are partners in life and love. Your life lit up the day you met him, and I'm blessed to have been able to see you grow together. You're my sistah, but he's yo lobster!
